YU WEI-CHIAO Joe - History of a Photographer

Introducing Joe.
Nine years ago Joe flew from Taiwan to Melbourne and has lived in the city ever since.

Joe ventured down to Melbourne to pursue further study, completing two master degrees, a Masters in Art Management and another in Media and Communications. Joe went on to add that a Masters degree is certainly not a direct line to your dream job, “landing a dream job didn’t happen, so for right now I’m working as a Garbo”.

Since finishing his studies, Joe has worked on a few interesting projects that have included videography for an architecture company, curating an exhibition, branding small businesses and most recently shooting a music video.

Joe has been shooting live music events since 2019, starting with a focus on metalcore before shifting focus to hardcore in 2022. We also now know Joe has spent some time on the other end of the lens.

Before beginning mandatory military service in Taiwan, Joe played in a local punk band. Joe explained the difficulty of being a punk musician in Taiwan, stating “this genre was not very welcome in Taiwan during the 2010’s”, explaining “we didn't get far but I have always loved punk and heavy music”.

Joe also left us with a nice note about how he feels he has been welcomed into Melbourne Hardcore.

Joe hopes to play drums again in the near future, with his sites set on piecing together a hardcore lineup for the new year,

“Ever since I started taking photos in the hardcore community, I have felt welcome and a part of it all, being able to get to know the people in the scene who share the love for the music makes me feel connected to the community. I’m so grateful to be involved in the community, my life would look so different without Hardcore.” - Joe (Yu Wei-Chiao)
